Deer & The Hunter

Legend of the Deer & The Hunter (translated from Chinese)

A long time ago, a young hunter, brave and kind-hearted, lived beneath a beautiful coral cliff. One day while hunting, he spotted the most enchanting creature he had ever laid eyes on; a flowery-skinned deer that had been injured and was lying still on the side of the road. His instincts as a hunter were overcome by her beauty: so he knelt down beside her, gently treated her wounds and safely guided her back to the mountainside.

Sometime later, this beautifully captivating creature once again appeared before him. Once certain she had his attention, she gracefully moved away from him, frequently turning her head towards the hunter, beckoning him to follow. Mesmerized, and without thought or will, the hunter answered her call. After a period of time, they arrived at the very top of the cliff. With this beguiling deer at his side, a panoramic view, unlike anything he had ever seen before, magically unfolded before him: azure seawater stretching as far back as the eyes could see, nestled by pure white sandy beaches and green fertile land. At that moment, the deer turned around, faced the hunter and threw him a deep loving glance that melted his heart. Suddenly, a large circular and blinding light encompassed the deer and what emerged from the light was a beautiful girl. She ran to him and embraced the hunter tightly, forever confessing her eternal love and adoration for him.

The hunter loved this land and the beautiful girl so much that they settled down on the top of the coral cliff. There they raised and nurtured their offspring, who are said to be the ancestors of the current Li ethnic minority group in Hainan.

In 1987, the Sanya municipal government erected a statue on top of this very same coral cliff in honor of the legend. Since then, this enchanted and beautiful mountain park has become a sacred land of love and the city of Sanya has adopted the name Lucheng - the city of deer.
