Teaching Prospects for Someone Over 50

Postby kaosnnc » Thu Oct 24, 2013 4:49 am

Ken,

I am currently taking the TEFL/TESOL certification and look forward to traveling to China to teach English. I have looked at several positions that I found listed on various sites.

One thing that caught my eye was the age requirement. Some listings have a age limit of fifty. At the present time I am 52, but in very good shape. I have a master's degree and have been working as a instructor and a program coordinator for a community college in North Carolina for the past nine years.

Are there positions for individuals like myself at age fifty-two?

Thanks,

Keith

There is an unofficial age limit of sixty.

What individual schools choose to impose is their own choice.

From on high, word comes down, never in writing, discouraging hiring of anyone over 60, unless they have some special value.

Just keep on applying.

Once you are hired, you can be pretty much assured tenure as long as you are considered of value.

Regards,

Ken
