I have taught all various forms of ESL/EFL in Japan (3yrs) Italy (4yrs), and in California (18yrs) from elementary school through university. I have a BA in English and MS in TESOL from a state university. More importantly, I am responsible, punctual, well-dressed, humorous, and highly effective at my job--I love what I do. I am hoping to find work in Shanghai in 2012.

BUT, I have a wife and 12 yr old daughter who I would like to accompany me. My wife is a native speaker of Italian and has been teaching at colleges and universities in the Los Angeles area with great success for the last 10 yrs.

Who should we contact about the possibility of BOTH of us gaining employment, for a year, as well as school for my daughter? What sort of institution might employ both of us?

Hi Steve,

The only type of school in China that could use someone with your qualifications, possibly hire your wife, and provide decent education to your daughter would be an international school. I wouldn’t waste my time with either a public university or private English language school.

Conduct a Google search on [“international school” Shanghai] (without the brackets) and see what you come up with. The Shanghai American School would be a good place to start.
