Dr. Lu International Dental Clinic

I lost a very old and large filling the other day that resulted in a cracking and loss of part of my first molar. Based on Sinobear's recommendation, I gave Dr. Lu a call and am very glad that I did.

I am someone who has had particularly bad experiences in the dentist's chair and typically requires a great deal of sedation (nitrous oxide) and local anesthetics in order to endure the procedure. Neither general anesthesia nor nitrous oxide is available in mainland China and so I was extremely reluctant to repair the tooth until after I could return home. Nevertheless, this tooth was causing me considerable discomfort and was simply not going to wait to be attended to. As it turned out, my fears were unfounded.

I believe good dentistry is as much (maybe more of) an art than a science and Dr. George Lu (Luk in Cantonese) is clearly a particularly skilled dentist. His demeanor instills reassuring confidence and he takes a great deal of pride in his work.

I was particularly impressed with the fact that he was able to administer just the right amount of local anesthetic to sufficiently block all pain but not so much that I ended up leaving his office with a swollen and numb lip.

The office itself is very upscale. Patients are greeted with a soothing cascading waterfall as they approach the entrance to his office and several large aquariums inside the office provide a tranquil and "New York Upper East Side" effect. It appears that all staff, including Dr. Lu, speak a reasonable amount of English as most of their patients are Western expats working for international companies.

The total cost of the relatively large porcelain crown came to 2800 yuan or about USD $421.00. While Dr. Lu's fees scale the high end for Guangzhou, by comparison, this represents a savings of 28 to 56 percent over the typical U.S. fees of $580 to $860 and the work is at least just as good if not better. In fact, my experience with Dr. Lu was probably one of the best of my life.
