Decent Thai food in a comfortable environment with reasonable service--for China.

The Banana Leaf is a Thai restaurant chain with a large menu and three locations in Guangzhou.  The curried and barbecued dishes are your best bet.

Not As Authentic as Eating in Bangkok But Better Than Nothing in Guangzhou

We visited the Banana Leaf restaurant located on the second floor of the Times Square Mall this afternoon after what was probably a one-year hiatus.

The food wasn't quite as good as I remember it from the various times we've eaten there in the past. I ordered the vegetable spring roll, which was fine, and the New Zealand lamb chops, which came to the table as three thinly-sliced, dried-out shank cuts. Very disappointing. I followed up with the beef shish kebab and that was as I remembered it: not bad.

My wife ordered the beef curry, which was good, and a rice-based noodle dish with sliced pork that was to her liking.

The restaurant was more or less empty when we arrived yet service was sluggish and the food took quite a long time to be brought to the table. We waited over five minutes for our change after we paid the bill.

Good Points Restaurant offers better than average curried dishes and shish kebab.
Bad Points Avoid imported meats including the New Zealand lamb chops. As is true of most Asian restaurants in China, there is no dessert menu.
