Teaching Options with State Certification

Postby Quinn68 » Sat Mar 13, 2010 12:27 pm

Dear Dr. Greg,

This is one of the most informative and helpful sites I've found on living and working in China. It has given me much insight as to what I can expect in this country.

Last year I met a wonderful Chinese student here in the U.S. while she was attending a local university for the semester. We developed a very close relationship before she left to go back to China. Upon careful deliberation and with her encouragement, I've decided to move to China to continue this relationship.

As it stands, I'm a state certified high school teacher with a graduate degree in education. I applied to teach at an international school in Beijing (where she lives) but was unsuccessful. Given this, what is my next best option? What type of school would be the most practical choice for establishing a career at?

Hi Quinn,

There has to be more than just one international school in Beijing and, as you correctly surmised from the Guide, international schools and China branches of Western universities are the only route you should be taking.

I know it will be tempting but, please, do not even consider teaching "oral English" in China as a stopgap measure until something more appropriate comes along. Doing so will significantly decrease your chances of ever doing anything else in China.

I would suggest you just keep plugging away at the various international schools in China, even if that means teaching in Shanghai or Guangzhou. It won't be an ideal situation, of course, but at least you will both be in the same country. There are millions of happily married Chinese couples who live and work in different provinces so this is not a concept that will be foreign to your girlfriend (although it is to us).

Best of luck with this. Let us know where you finally land.
Dr. Greg
