Translating the Site into Chinese

Postby Kevin » Thu Sep 03, 2009 12:30 pm

Dear MKL crew,

Have you ever considered translating the site into Chinese? I think it would be of great interest to English-studying Chinese and those who've had personal interaction with foreign 'friends'.

I don't think there is much that is that politically dangerous, as most of the criticisms of China are widely acknowledged within the Middle-Kingdom: over-population, misogyny, under-developed teaching methods, etc...

Hi Kevin,

We had thought about and even discussed the possibility of having the Guide, especially, translated into Chinese. However, we soon thereafter noticed that Chinese guests who were particularly interested in a specific page were using Google's free translation service (translate.google.com) to read it. I have no idea how accurate this translation service is.

Given how often translate.google.com is used by our Chinese visitors, we don't know if there is a real need that would justify the considerable cost in having the Guide professionally translated.

I see your point. If translating will cost you a lot of money then it's probably the right decision.

But Google translator is nowhere near the stage where it might make professional translators obsolete.

I think it's unnecessary to translate this Guide to Chinese, most of the Chinese guests who are visiting this website can read English, such as me, although my English is not good enough to express myself as you guys, I can read this site anyway. I've introduced this website to my Chinese friends and also friends from United States and United Kingdom.
