The last laser printer I bought in China was shortly after I arrived, back in 2003. I am a big fan of laser printers and prefer them to inkjet printers, the latter of which are much less expensive to buy up front but much more costly to run over time (due to the relatively high price and low capacity of inkjet cartridges).

My last laser printer was an Epson 6200L, and it gave me about four years of relatively trouble-free use before it finally died. However, its memory was quite limited by comparison, 2MB as opposed to 8MB, and it was considerably more expensive back in 2003 at 2500 yuan with a maximum output of only 300dpi.

By comparison, the HP LaserJet P1008 is a joy to use: its output is far superior, it takes up much less space, and it handles double-sided printing without the typical paper jams I used to experience with the Epson 6200L.

The only downside is that the installation disk does not come with Vista drivers. You'll have to use the Internet to search for drivers if you're running Vista and 64-bit drivers are available.

This particular printer is readily available throughout mainland China and seems to range in price from 1300 to 1450 yuan, depending on location and your bargaining skills.

Highly recommended.

Good Points Produces crisp, professional-looking output at 600dpi quality. Handles double-sided printing effortlessly, and is easy to install. Connects via USB port.
Bad Points Installation disk does not come with Vista drivers. You'll have to use the Internet to find Vista x86 and 64-bit drivers but they are easy to locate.
