Landing First Job in an International City

Postby Michael » Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:15 am

Is it true that it is difficult for first time, inexperienced English teachers to land jobs in a first tier or international city? If so, what are your suggestions in getting around this problem?

The only thing I can think of is to try and get some kind of tutoring or language teaching experience here in the U.S. first. I would really like to be working in a major city.

Thanks for any advice,

Michael

Yes, it is more difficult to get employment in a larger city. That is simply because more job seekers perceive working in a larger city a more desirable choice.

Hence, employers can be more choosy. Choosing a teacher with both teaching experience and successful, (completed contract) teaching in China experience lessons the odds the teacher will fail to thrive.

No amount of teaching experience back home assures you can adapt to living in China.

Your best bet is to get some teaching in China experience in a smaller city. Doing that will also allow you to visit and choose what city you ultimately want to work in. After you have some China and teaching experience under your belt, simply to be persistent in applying for positions in the city you choose. Sooner or later, you will find an employer who will take you. But it will take perseverance on your part.

I wish you well.
