Hello Headmaster Ken,
Let me first thank you for this extremely detailed and comprehensive site. Certainly it has helped ease my search for information and the testimonials are quite enthusiastic as well!
I am currently attending university and will be graduating with a degree in 2013. Due to strange personal circumstances, I have a year off from classes starting in September and I would love to use the opportunity to work abroad. In order to do this I am planning to obtain CELTA certification in July and then hopefully leave around September.
My question is how realistic are the possibilities of my getting a work visa through a position that doesn't require a degree? Is it possible to obtain a position like this through the Internet before even arriving in China?
Some sites I have contacted immediately close their doors when they hear I don't have a degree. Others confirm it is NO PROBLEM but to be honest I can't say I've trusted some of the recruiters I've spoken with.
The idea of first arriving in China on a travel visa and then doing a 'Hong Kong run' to obtain a working visa (once a position has been found) has been suggested to me but the main issue I have with deciding on any of this is all the information I've found seems dated (the latest reports are 2008). It would be great to have some current information.
I want to know how realistic my expectations are to find some TEFL work in China without a degree. So long as I get to spend 4-6 months in China I really don't mind much about salary or luxury - just a bit of security!
