Bringing money to China

Postby wuxi » Thu Aug 27, 2009 1:38 pm

Hi Ken,

I'm moving to China soon and I was wondering if I should bring cash or travellers cheques. Also, if cash is preferred what denominations should I bring and how much.

Thanks,

Wuxi

That answer depends in part on where you will go. If you are moving to Beijing or a large city you will need three time the amount one might require in a small city.

Assuming you have a return plane ticket (or funds to purchase one) and your housing is provided by your employer, you could get by in a small city on as little as $1,000 until you are first paid, (4-6 weeks).

Naturally, more is better in case something happens.

China is pretty much a cash society. Bring dollars, convert to RMB and put the money in a local bank. Take out what you need at local ATMs.
